What is Delta 8 THC?
What is Delta 8 THC? I'm so glad you asked! Delta 8 THC is a federally legal cannabinoid that is derived from Hemp (the same plant as CBD). I am sure you have heard of Delta 8 THC's more well known cousin Delta 9 THC. Delta 9 is not legal in North Carolina yet at any capacity, Delta 8 THC however is. The two compounds have some similarities however major differences which give them different effects.
The biggest and most important difference is that they are derived from two different plants. Delta 9 THC is derived from Marijuana which is a controlled substance making it illegal. Delta 8 THC is derived from the Hemp plant which cannabinoids are federally legal in ALL states. The 2018 Farm Bill made this possible. Now we can enjoy the beautiful effects of this cannabinoid at different consumption levels. Leafly describes the different experiences as follows,
"According to the National Cancer Institute, delta-8-THC can be defined as: “An analogue of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) with antiemetic, anxiolytic, appetite-stimulating, analgesic, and neuroprotective properties. [Delta-8-THC] binds to the cannabinoid G-protein coupled receptor CB1, located in the central nervous system…This agent exhibits a lower psychotropic potency than [delta-9-THC], the primary form of THC found in cannabis.”
Delta-8-THC is chemically different from delta-9-THC by only a few atomic bonds and still offers a potent high of its own. While delta-8-THC only exists naturally in fractions of a percent, companies are finding value in concentrating esoteric cannabinoids for their unique effects and applications."
